Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
A sleeve gastrectomy is an operation which permanently alters your stomach. This is performed laparoscopically (keyhole) or via a single incision technique. 2/3rd of the stomach is removed leaving behind a small sleeve (tube) of stomach which results in restriction to certain foods, and limits the amount of food you can eat.
This operation can be performed as a standalone procedure, or as a first stage procedure in cases of super-obesity, to make a bigger operation safer. This is a major operation which removes part of your stomach, and cannot be reversed. In addition to the restriction, it is thought that hormone changes occur, which alter your appetite.
It is important to bear in mind known risks that can occur in a small percentage of cases. These include the risk of bleeding or a staple line leak, as well as difficulty eating due to over narrowing of the stomach (stricture). However these complications are rare. On average patients are expected to lose approximately 50% of their excess weight loss, and many highly motivated patients exceed this expectation.
