Laparoscopic Gastric Banding

A gastric band is a silicone ring that is placed around the top part of your stomach. This is inserted using a Laparoscopic or Single Incision Technique. Once placed, the band restricts the types and amount of food you can eat. However, you have to attend the outpatient clinic over the coming months to have your gastric band adjusted gradually to help you reach your optimum restriction level, allowing you to eat a healthy diet, in small and satisfying portions.

Although the operation itself is quick and safe, it is important to bear in mind other known risks that can occur in a small percentage of cases. These include the risk of gastric band erosion, slippage and infection, as well as intolerance to the band, port related problems, and the risk of no or minimal weight loss. However, on average patients lose approximately 50% of their excess weight loss, and many highly motivated patients exceed this expectation.
