Endoscopic Gastric Balloon
The Endoscopic (Intragastric) Balloon is a non-surgical method to help aid weight loss. This procedure is performed as a day case, and involves a light anaesthetic. Once asleep, an endoscope is placed via the mouth into the stomach, and the soft silicone balloon is inserted and inflated with 400-700ml sterile saline. Once fitted, the balloon should partially fill your stomach and help you feel fuller sooner, and so you eat smaller portions. On average patients lose 15-20kg in weight over 6 months.
The balloon is designed to only stay inside you for only 6 months, after which you must return to have this removed. This is again performed as a day case, and once asleep an endoscope is passed into the stomach via the mouth, the saline is removed and the balloon is extracted from your stomach.
