Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The Gastric bypass is an operation which reduces the size of your stomach and re-attaches the small intestine resulting in malabsorption of the food you eat. This is performed using a Laparoscopic (keyhole) or Single Incision Technique.
The new small stomach restricts the types and amount of food you can eat, the altered intestines means food meets digestive juices later resulting in malabsorption. There are also some changes to the hormones which are released from the stomach and bowel, which changes your appetite and feeling of hunger. This operation also has a dramatic effect on type 2 diabetes and can resolve up to 80% of cases.
This is a major operation which alters your anatomy. However, nothing is removed and can be reversed. Following a gastric bypass it is important that you take life-long vitamin and mineral supplementation and have regular blood tests and long-term follow-up medical care.
This is one of the most frequently performed operations for weight loss, but it is important to bear in mind the known risks which can occur in a small percentage of cases. These include the risk of bleeding, a leak from one of the joins, vitamin and mineral deficiency, dumping syndrome, and in rare cases hypoglycaemia. On average patients lose approximately 60% of their excess weight loss and many patients exceed this expectation.
